The theme of the DBS Blockchain hackathon will be centered around this question: How can we use blockchain technology to make banking services more successful, joyful and secure in developed and emerging markets?
The purpose the hackathon is to give emerging startups the chance to pitch their blockchain ideas and products in front of judges from DBS, IDA, Coins.ph, and Startupbootcamp FinTech.
The event is sponsored by IBM, a heavyweight in the technology space, which is sure to bring much attention. In partnership with startupbootcamp FinTech, and supported by Infocomm Investments among many others, the event will have plenty of backing from companies wanting to see Bitcoin succeed.
The blockchain is essentially a transaction database, keeping a record transactions. The blockchain consists of a long chain of blocks, hence the name. In each block is a record of transactions that occurred within those 10 minutes, up to 1 MB of transaction data per block at current Bitcoin Core protocols.
But what makes it different transaction databases in traditional fiat systems is that the blockchain is not kept secret, and all users of Bitcoin have their copy of the blockchain, so they can verify transactions independent of third parties.
Namecoin is aspiring to building a decentralized internet without oppression or suppression, leveraging the blockchain to do all of the heavy lifting, for example.
